Chapter Nine

QUINN

A dull ache spread across my forehead as the morning sun hit my face. The churning in my stomach made me groan in discomfort. What exactly happened last night?

I remember going to the bar. There were a few beers involved and then….

Jake brought me home and carried me upstairs. The hazy memory of me begging him to stay and cuddle came into focus and I cringed at how drunk and needy I was acting. I was never much of a drinker. It didn’t take a lot to turn me into a blubbering mess.

I dragged myself to the bathroom and let the cold water run down my face as I leaned over the sink. The chill snapped me awake and cleared the remaining fog from my mind.

“Well, look who’s finally up,” Harris said from the doorway.

I glowered at him in the bathroom mirror.

“You couldn’t keep up with the old man from the sound of it.” A smug smirk spread across his lips.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“‘Oh, Jake! I’m sooooooooo drunk!’” Harris' voice raised an octave in a poor attempt at mimicking me. “‘Stay with me! I can’t be left alone!’”

“Shut up.” I stuffed my toothbrush in my mouth and aggressively scrubbed at the grime that covered my teeth.

Harris opened his mouth to make more disparaging comments. I leaned across the room and slammed the door in his face in response. His protests were muffled but I could tell he was still making fun of my drunken ramblings from last night.

Squeezing myself into a pair of tight leggings and a loose t-shirt, I braced myself for the looks of disappointment and inevitable lecture from my mom. If Harris knew what had happened last night, there’s no way she didn’t. She was irate when she thought I was fooling around with the neighbor, she’d be apoplectic when she discovered he took me out and I got drunk.

“Late night last night, huh?” Mom asked nonchalantly as I made my way through the kitchen.

“Yup.” I had my eyes on the front door. Ten more steps to freedom.

“What’s on your agenda for the day.” There was an eerie calm in her voice. Had she not heard the commotion when I came home last night? I figured she’d at least have some more opinions on me up and leaving while she was mid-rant.

“Just going for a run and then…” I shrugged my shoulders.

“Going to see Jake again?” There it was. That was the statement. Her voice dripped with contempt.

“Maybe.” I stuffed my feet into my shoes and reached for the door. I didn’t even bother to tie my laces as I made a dash for freedom.

“This won’t end well, Quinn,” Mom called out as I shut the door behind me.

A weary sigh escaped my lips. Between Harris acting like a jerk and my mother doing all she could to sabotage my relationship, I was emotionally drained. Was it all worth it?

Jake was good looking and yes, he treated me well, but what good was it when
